As the school year comes to a close I'd like to let you know what a privilege it has been to teach and learn alongside your children. Although each student has grown socially, developmentally and academically, I am especially proud of the way all of the children have combined old knowledge with new, to become respectful citizens. The outstanding degree of caring and empathy these children have demonstrated throughout the year is a credit to their families.
After the newness of summer vacation begins to wear off, I encourage you to take a look at the blog for activities in each of the academic areas. Through these choices, your child will keep current with many of the 2nd grade objectives without even realizing he/she is learning.
Each fall, winter, and spring your child receives a "snapshot" assessment on reading fluency. This Curriculum Based Measurment (CBM) report is included with the report card materials. Please consider taking advantage of the extra time in summer to give your child a boost in reading.
I highly recommend taking advantage of the summer reading programs at the Public Library. Encourage your child to read 20 minutes per day. This can be done in a variety of ways including: independent reading, partner reading and read alouds. Your child's guided reading level is included in the comment section of the report card. With this information your public librarian will be able to help locate books that will be just right for your child. You can also find "just right" books on the blog (Language Arts/Scholastic Book Wizard) or (My Library Thing). You can easily make a list from these sites and check out all sorts of books from the library.

In closing, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you , the parents of these wonderful students, for all you have done. Let's take a look at a sampling of events that would not have happened this year without the work of volunteers...math explorations, field trips, art awareness, assemblies, holidays, classroom parties, 2nd edition editors, P.T.A., P.E. helpers, LMC helpers and more. The volunteerism at May Watts is unique in that parents are willing to contribute in so many different ways-and ALWAYS with a smile. I would like to thank you all for truly taking an interest in the education of your children...and for making my job of teaching your children a great pleasure.

Please insist that your child wear a bike helmet when bike riding or scooter riding. We talked about the importance of this safety device during class last week. Half of the students in 2BR raised their hand when asked if they wear a helmet. That means half of the students do not wear helmets. Please, please, please help them protect those brains that are full of all sorts of great knowledge.
