This week's focus skill in reading has been Narrative elements. We have been talking about the Who of stories (characters), the When and Where of stories (setting), the What (the problem), the How (how was the problem solved) and the Why (why did the author write this book - to inform, entertain or persuade). When you are reading with your child at home, discussion of these story elements will help him/her make better connections and comprehend the text.
Family Reading Night
Family Reading Night will be October 6th. This annual event is held here at the school and is geared towards K-2nd grade. More information will come home by backpack mail or via email soon!
Math Tests
On Monday, you will receive your child's math test in his/her home folder. Part A, of the test and Part B, of the test will receive different percentages. The score for Part A is the one that is recorded in my grade book. Part A assesses skills that we have covered in class and the children should be able to answer the questions independently. Part B covers skills that will receive additional teaching time and we don't expect that children will have mastered these skills yet. Please remember that the percentage grade is just to give you a rough idea of how a child has done on the test. It is really the skills that we are recording. For each skill we are looking to see if the child knows that skill securely or is still developing that skill or is just in the beginning stages of understanding the concept.
Science: Water Cycle Unit
During the next several weeks, we will be learning about the water
cycle. Students will be learning about the changing stages of the
water cycle while exploring the following essential questions:
• What are the stages of the water cycle?
• What is evaporation?
• What is condensation?
• What is accumulation?
• How do these stages work together in the water cycle?
Social Studies: Map Skills
This week we learned about map skills. Essential questions that were covered are:
- What is a map?
- How do map features help you read a map?
- What are cardinal directions?
