Curriculum Night:

Dear Parents,

Welcome to a new and exciting school year. The opening of the 2012-13 year went very smoothly here at May Watts due to the hard work of the dedicated teachers, office staff and parents who contribute to the rich life of our school community.

On Thursday, September 13, 2012, you are invited to visit your child's teacher during Parent Orientation/Curriculum Night. This informational night is designed for parents only to attend. Each classroom teacher will make a presentation regarding the district's curriculum and will provide information specific to his or her classroom.

The following schedule should allow for parents of more than one May Watts student to visit more than one classroom.  The schedule is as follows:

Parent Orientation/Curriculum Night Schedule:

Kindergarten through 5th grades, Session 1  6:30 – 6:55 p.m.
Whole School Session (CCS Math/Citizenship/CHAMPS/ Introduction of Specials teachers) in Gym 7:05 – 7:25 p.m.
            Kindergarten through 5th grades, Session 2  7:35 – 8:00 p.m.

Please remember that due to the large number of parents in attendance it is not possible to discuss individual student progress. There will be a sign-up for conferences in November in the multi-purpose room on this night. (As a courtesy, those parents who have more than three students enrolled at Watts will be contacted by the office to set up their conference times.) The staff and I look forward to seeing you on September 13th.
Sincerely,

Brian LeCrone
Principal

Spelling:

On Friday, your child brought home his/her first Spelling “Tic-Tac-Toe” homework.  The spelling homework is due on Thursday.  You will also see a “sample” Tic-Tac-Toe that we completed in class during the past week.

Please note the following:

·         After your child completes each tic-tac-toe activity he/she should initial below the activity.
(Note: 3 activities are required; if your child completes 5 or more activities, extra credit is earned.)
·         A parent should sign on the parent signature line after your child has finished his/her homework.
·         All written activities should be stapled to the back of the tic-tac-toe homework form. Please remind your child to put his or her name on each page that is turned in (just in case something gets loose). Please do not use paper clips to connect the homework pages together…papers are easily lost that way.
·         Please refer to the top of your child’s pre-test to see which set of words your child will be working on for the week (Pattern List or Alternate List). All students will study the same commonly misspelled words.
·         Your child may want to do one activity per night during the school week.  If, however, your child would like to complete the tic-tac-toe homework over the weekend, that is fine.. Some students turn in their entire packet every Monday, while others choose to turn in the packet on Thursday morning.

Thank you, in advance, for overseeing your child’s spelling homework.  The good news is…we completed one week’s worth of spelling homework in class—only 29 more weeks to go!

Math:

Homework- Please refer to the class calendar for this week's assignments. You will see the abbreviation MRB which stands for Math Reference Book. All of this week's assignments are in the MRB which your child brought home at the beginning of the year.

Otter Creek Program-Students will be learning addition math facts through the Otter Creek Mastering Math Facts program. Children were given a placement test to determine at what level they would begin and a handwriting test to determine what their 1-minute and 2-minute  timing goals should be. We will be practicing facts throughout the week and have our first 1-minute timing on Thursday. Each week your child will bring home his/her most recent 1-minute timing. This will let you know what level your child is currently working on. For further information about this program please click on the link in the right hand column of this blog: Math Practice Sights - Mastering Math Facts Practice Sets.

Scholastic Book Order

On Friday your child brought home book order forms for your perusal. If you choose to order books for your child, please fill out the order form on the back of the book selection pamphlet. I will write a “book order form due date” on the calendar at the bottom of this blog so you will know when your order/check is due. Please make checks payable to: Scholastic Book Orders. Please do not send cash. If you order from more than one form, you need only write one check...just combine the totals. I am very discreet about distributing books when they arrive in the classroom (I sneak them into backpacks while the children are at a special) so children who choose not to order, do not feel left out. Also, if you would like to place a gift order, just let me know and I’ll put your order in the office for you to pick up.
