Dear Families,
I hope you are enjoying this beautiful 80 degree weather...during the winter months!!!! When discussing the change of seasons with our 2nd graders, it's really difficult to explain that it is still winter, even though we are coming to school in shorts, sleeveless shirts and flip-flops! The windows have been wide open and 3 fans have been running in the classroom all week. I sure hope your children don't grow up completely confused thinking that March is the month to break out the lawn chairs and grill. ;) Meanwhile, let's enjoy this weather while it lasts, and let's hope we don't have too many mitten days ahead.
Here are the latest updates for the upcoming week:
Spelling:
This week, your child should be studying the words from lesson 24 (pattern: gh, ph). A few students had the incorrect spelling Tic-Tac-Toe attached as their spelling homework page. (I think I had a few old tic-tac-toes from the previous week on the stack for this week.) The top of the correct sheed should read Lesson 24: Pattern: gh, ph. If your child has the incorrect homework page, I will have copies on Monday to send home.
If your child would like to get a start on his/her spelling homework this weekend, the words can be retrieved by clicking on the SPELLING tab at the top of this blog. Scroll down to lesson 24 and you will see the words.
Math:
Home Links 9.6 and 9.7 will be due on Wednesday, 3/21. Some students had the opportunity to begin 9.7 homework sheet during math explorations on Friday. 9.7 was sent home in backpacks on Friday, so please look for it, complete it and send it back. Home Link 9.6 will be coming home on Monday.
Social Studies:
As a final project to wrap up our Economy Unit, students in 2BR voted to work on a "Producers and Consumers" project. Students brainstormed a list of items that they can bring from home to share with the class. We will be creating goods from these materials and then sell the goods to classmates--using fake money, of course. Please do not go out and buy materials...anything you have around the house will work. We will be making small items such as, bookmarks, rings, bracelets, boats, pictures, and whatever else your children dream up with their crative minds. Here's a list of ideas the students put together:
paper
glue
aluminum foil
paper clips
safety pins
cardboard
old fabric scraps
cotton balls
cups
beads
paper plates
string/yarn
plastic spoons/forks
rubber bands
buttons
feathers
straws
glitter
tape
paper towel rolls
toilet paper rolls
cleaned out containers
empty boxes (cereal, oatmeal, pringles)
popsicle sticks
sticks
rocks
seashells
stamps
stickers
leaves
Writing:
Please have your child bring a book of his/her choice to school. This book should be a "just right" book for your child's reading ability. Students will be using the book to write a book review and recommendation. If your child does not have a book at home to bring, we have plenty of books here at school.
Reading:
This week, your child will begin reading Max Found Two Sticks, by Brian Pinkney. In this story, a young boy named Max doesn’t feel like talking to anyone, so instead he finds two sticks and gegins drumming on anything he can find. When he’s asked what he’s doing, he just drums his answer. Then the sudden appearance of a marching band and an unexpected gift of real drumsticks change Max’s mood.
