We have been busy, busy, busy here in 2BR. Our new social studies unit in history started this week, along with our math unit on addition and subtraction.
Due to the upcoming days off, our spelling test schedule is a little different than usual. Please look at the homework due dates in the left-hand column of the blog for the changes.

Hedgehog Bakes A Cake : Assessment on Monday 11/7
Your child is reading Hedgehog Bakes a Cake, by Maryann Macdonald. In this story, Hedgehog wants to make a yellow cake. His friends stop by to help, but each one gives bad advice about baking and Hedgehog ends up with a terrible mess on his hands. After his friends leave, Hedgehog locks the door and starts over. This time he follows the recipe, and later he and his friends enjoy a delicious cake. Please encourage your child to read Hedgehog Bakes a Cake over the weekend. Vocabulary Power precedes the story.

Social Studies History Unit
Essential Understanding: Students will be introduced to our country’s history and how it has shaped our country’s present and future.
Essential Questions:

5. What was the major cause of the Civil War?

Math Unit 4 Addition and Subtraction:
Addition and subtraction number stories are used as a vehicle for developing mental arithmetic skills. The three main areas of focus in this unit are:
To solve number stories,
To read and show temperatures, and
To develop different strategies for adding 2- and 3-digit numbers.

Writing Poetry Unit:
Beginning next week, the 2nd graders will explore the genre of poetry. They will develop an appreciation appreciation for poetry noting it's sounds, rhythms, and imagery as well as it's rich sensory language which can provide a basis for their own poetry writing.
The wide variety of poems we will study include:
- acrostic
- cinquain
- rhyming couplet and
- definition
