Field Trip
Thursday, March 10th is our field trip to Sci Tech museum. We will leave the school around 9:15am and return by 1:00pm. Since we will not be here during our regular lunch time, students will not have access to hot lunch or milk services that day. Please make sure that you pack a lunch and a drink, if needed, for your child so they can eat it when we return to school.

Six Flags
A number of students participated in the reading program to earn a ticket to Six Flags Amusement Park. Mrs. May has submitted our names. We will distribute the tickets when we receive them, later in the year. We anticipate they will arrive in mid-May.
Writing
We are starting a Expository Review writing unit. This is a unit where students review a book - describe it, discuss it's good and bad parts and then either recommend it or not to others. For examples, click on the Spaghetti Book Club Link under Explore Books. If you click on books, you will find a host of reviews, written by children, about different books. If you see reviews over the next few weeks, point them out to your children - restaurant reviews, toy reviews, book reviews, movie reviews, travel mags, etc. It will help them understand this important type of writing!
Students have been asked to bring in a favorite book to use for their Expository Review. Please help your child choose a book from home or the Public Library to bring into school on Monday. Books are also available in the classroom and LMC for use if your child can not bring a book from home.
Reading
Our story this week was Pine Park Mystery. In this play, two children solve the mystery of the missing shiny items. The surprising thief is revealed at the end and the items are found. The focus skill this week was Narrative Elements and we have been discussing settings, characters, main events, problems and solutions.
Math
We finished the chapter 8 assessment today and that concluded our study of fractions. We will begin chapter 9 on Monday. Chapter 9 is all about Measurement - measuring with yards and meters; perimeter; area; units of weight. We will be working on this chapter until Spring Break. Subtraction - If you and your child would like to start practicing subtraction when regrouping is necessary, please click on the links under Math Practice Sites: Math Playground: Regrouping and/or BBB Rule. Our paper and pencil work about Subtraction with regrouping will not be presented until after spring break, however, if you would like to see how we are teaching this objective feel free to take a sneak peek.
Social Studies
We started our Economy unit this week. We have been discussing what goods and services are, what income is and how you earn it, and what things are essential to survive (needs) and what things aren't (wants). This unit too, will last until Spring Break and we will discuss other topics such as where do goods come from, who are producers and consumers and how do maps assist in transporting goods.
Citizenship
Because of some recent incidents in second grade of unkindness, we felt it would be a good idea to talk to the children about perspective taking. This week, each class had a one hour session with me. I shared with students how babies cry to have their needs met. Then, as children get a little older, they learn to communicate their needs through their words. Now, as bigger children, they need to think not only about their own needs, but about the needs and feelings of others. Students can begin thinking not only about themselves but about how their choices might affect another person. Our big phrase this week has been, "It's not all about you. How do you think the other person is feeling?" We will continue to work on being kind to each other and taking care of others in our community the way we want to be cared for.
