Happy New Year!

Welcome back to the 2nd half of second grade.  The kids have made a wonderful start the last three days.  They have been enthusiastic, cooperative and hard working.  I am so proud to see the growth and independence your children have made in recent months.  What a wonderful bunch of children they are!

What's Up in 2BR?
Writing:
We are finishing up our Slice of Life writing.  The children will write and edit their stories.  Later, we will be using these stories for their published 2nd grade book - 2nd Edition.

Reading:
The story next  week will be Pumpkin Fiesta.  It is the story of Old Juana and Foolish Fernando.  Old Juana wins the prize every year for the best pumpkins and Foolish Fernando doesn't like it.  He spies on her to find out her secrets and tries to replicate what she does.  He doesn't do a very good job.

Focus Skill: Predicting Outcomes.  Children are asked to take the clues that they see in the text and predict what they think will occur next.  For example, if the book tells us the clouds were gathering, it became dark and the wind picked up, what do you predict is going to happen next?

Math:
We have begun Unit 6 in math.  We will be studying solving addition and subtraction stories, introducing and practicing making arrays and introducing multiplication with arrays and division using equal sharing stories.

Exploration volunteers are still needed for upcoming dates. Please see the list in the left hand column of this blog for openings.

Science:
We have been finishing up our Nutrition unit this week with writing food riddles.  The children will be making power point presentations of their riddles for Open House.  They are very anxious to share them with you!
