Read In:
We are having a read in on Tuesday, November 23. A note came home in your child's backpack on Friday. If you did not receive the note, here it is again:
1) Several (5-7) of your favorite books to read., 11/23/10, 2nd Grade will be having a We Are Thankful For Books READ-IN DAY. Please bring a sturdy bag with the following items to school with you:2) A flashlight or book light for "lights out" reading.3) An extra, healthy snack.
Students may wear pajamas to school on this day. Please wear sturdy shoes to and from school. Slippers may be brought in to wear during the read-in. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your teacher.

Reading:
This week we have been starting to read the play Johnny Appleseed. We will continue this story next week with different children taking turns reading different parts.
Math:
In math we are continuing in Unit 4. This unit teaches the children a variety of strategies for adding and subtracting numbers.
Social Studies:
We talked this week about the early settlers. Next week, we will continue with learning about the first Thanksgiving. This is part of our History unit that includes talking about the first people living in the United States, the first colonies, and some of the causes of the Revolutionary War.
Writing:
We are finishing up our Friendly Letter unit. The students have been busily writing letters this week and reading a variety of books that model letters. After Thanksgiving, we will be starting our Slice of Life Writing.
Preparing for Slice of Life Writing:
After Thanksgiving, we will be asking the children to bring in 3 pictures to write about for their Slice of Life writing. It is easier if the three pictures are about an extended event (a family visit or vacation, a day long outing, etc.). However, if that is not possible, 3 pictures of events THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO REMEMBER AND TALK ABOUT IN DETAIL are also acceptable. They will be writing about these events so it is imperative that they remember them and remember sufficient detail to make a story. Please begin to think about this and begin sending pictures the week of November 29th.
Spelling:
You may have already heard the joyous news from your child that we are not doing spelling this week. Due to the holiday and short week, we will send the next spelling list and homework home on Monday, November 29th. We will then take the test on Friday, December 3rd. Enjoy your week off!
Scholastic:
Scholastic orders are due in on Monday, November 29th (after Thanksgiving break). If you are purchasing books to give to your child as a gift, please write a note on the order form. I can put the books in the school office for you to pick up.
