Just Right” Books:
 
Has your child discussed our tool for finding “just right” books? If you ask, you’ll probably see your child hold up five fingers.

1 finger up = a vacation book is a “good old friend” book that your child has probably read over and over again. This book is fine for leisure but isn’t just right for school.
5 fingers up = a “dream” book that your child probably wants to read and should read with an adult’s guidance. Independent reading of a “dream” book can become frustrating...and what fun is that??!!

2-4 fingers up = a “just right” book. Yippee! Choose this book to read. It will help increase comprehension as well as fluency.

Blog tip for choosing books:

Can't decide on what to read? You and your child can easily create a list of books that are customized to your child's reading interests and ability. Just click on the "Book Adventure" link in the right hand column of this blog and follow the prompts to create a list. You may want to look for the books at your public library or look on the May Watts LMC site to see if the books are available here at school.

Spelling:

Pattern of the week: ame, ake (long a)
Commonly Misspelled Words: very, then, went

Your child will bring home spelling homework each Friday. Spelling Tic-Tac-Toe homework will always be due on Thursday mornings. (Some students prefer to complete this spelling homework over the weekend and turn it in early...and that’s o.k.)

Your child will be studying words from either the Pattern Spelling Word List (0-80%) on the pattern words section of the spelling pretest) or the Alternate Spelling Word List (90-100%) on the pattern word section of the spelling pretest).

Please read over the Spelling Tic-Tac-Toe page of the homework and encourage your child to complete at least 3 choices on the grid. An extra credit grade in effort will be given to children who consistently complete 5 or more choices. When choices have been completed, please staple any loose pages to the back of the Tic-Tac-Toe, sign in the parent signature area and return to school.
The spelling Post Test will be given on Thursdays.


Math Homework:

Math "Home Links" will start coming home on Wednesday. Please have your child finish the homework each evening using a pencil.  If  you or your child have any questions about the homework, please write a note right on the home link so that I can address the question on the return date. It is important that math homework is handed in on time, since the Every Day Math program will change learning objectives each day.


Volunteers Needed for Math Centers:

 I am still in need of 3 volunteers for Math centers on Thursday September 16th and 1 volunteer for Tuesday October 5th. This involves working in the classroom for about 1.5 hours from about 12:25-1:45. Volunteers work with small groups of children on math activities. All supplies and instructions are provided!
